Jubilee Bridge

Powys mentions a small bridge near the harbour which he could see from his window...

' ...I used to cross with a peculiar and romantic satisfaction a low bridge that crossed the backwater near the Southwick Harbour. I liked to think that I had at my disposal, near my room, so symbolic and sympathetic an edifice as a bridge.'

The Jubilee Bridge was built to mark Queen Victoria's golden jubilee in 1887 and allowed access to the beach across the muddy backwater. It was converted into a dam during the First World War and disappeared completely when new wharves were built in the 1950s.
