The following article appeared in the East Sussex News, January 27, 1900 (reproduced by kind permission of East Sussex Record Office ):

This was JCP's first official course of Extension lectures at Lewes or Hove, although he appears to have been active as a supplementary Extension lecturer at Hove the previous year. Yet, as the article shows, he had already given at least one course of public lectures in Lewes, though under whose aegis is not clear. Perhaps it was arranged by the local representatives of the Extension in the absence of official lectures.
